What it does
The contractor drills a suction point through the basement floor or slab, seals cracks and sump covers, runs a 3-inch or 4-inch PVC pipe up through the house or along the exterior, and mounts a fan that pulls radon from under the foundation and vents it above the roofline. A manometer on the pipe shows the system is running. Installation takes four to eight hours. A post-mitigation test, usually within 30 days, confirms the level is below 4 pCi/L; most systems bring Fairfax homes to between 0.4 and 2 pCi/L. Every contractor we match you with is NRPP or NRSB certified and warranties the system.
What is included
- Sub-slab, sub-membrane (crawl space) and drain-tile systems
- Quiet fans rated for 10+ years
- Post-mitigation test included in most quotes
- Written guarantee below 4 pCi/L
Why Fairfax businesses add this
Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, according to the EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General, and it has no smell or color. About one in every fifteen U.S. homes has elevated levels; in Zone 1 counties like Fairfax County the share is higher. Most Fairfax homeowners find out during a home sale, with a closing date a few weeks away and no idea which contractor to trust or what the job should cost.
